‘Fujitsubo’, Tokyo

Imagine going to a beauty parlour that looked like this!

Designers Hirotani Yoshihiro and Ishida Yusaku of Achvision Hirotani Studio wanted to create a building that is “structurally, the shape of a barnacle” – and boy, have they succeeded!

Located in the heart of Tokyo, ‘Fujitsubo’ is a copper-clad structure with three chimney-esque roofs, shedding natural light down through a series of inner floors to the ground-floor lobby. The result is a beautiful composition of light and space, from the reflective exterior to the columns of light streaming through the building. And yes, it’s currently being used as a beauty parlour.
