Inside The Magical World Of Kareena Zerefos

“I’ve started working on a series of work exploring childhood fears of an isolated, dystopian ‘Australia’. the imagery is based on my memories growing up in the rural outskirts of Sydney, surrounded by bush dwelling animals.” – Kareena Zerefos

The rich and raw work of Australian artist Kareena Zerefos lies in a fragile existence of fantasy and memory. Her diverse background in design combined with her skill in various media – pencil, gouache, tea and ink – leads to a combination of traditional and digital drawing techniques that dominate her immersive work.

Her art lies in the humble material wood as it quickly sets the warm tone to the narrative. Scenes often depict a child in the exploration of  isolation, fear, curiosity and imagination. The composition usually shows the child connected to an animal or other natural element as it ties into the rural backgrounds of Kareena’s childhood growing up in the outskirts of Sydney, Australia.
