New London Embassy by Kieran Timberlake

The United States Department of State announced today that Philadelphia architect Kieran Timberlake has won the competition to design the new US embassy in the UK.

Called New London Embassy, the embassy will move from its Grosvenor Square location to a new position beside the River Thames, where Timberlake hopes to resolve, in architectural terms, what an embassy aspires to be and what present realities dictate it must do.

Apparently the challenge at the heart of the task is to translate the core beliefs of the US democracy – transparency, openness and equality – into an environmentally-sustainable design. “Kieran Timberlake’s design meets the goal of creating a modern, welcoming, timeless, safe and energy efficient embassy for the 21st century”.

We have to admit that we’re in two minds over the proposed design…
