‘Solar Equation’, Melbourne

As part of the Light in Winter Festival in Melbourne, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has hung the Sun above Federation Square – almost literally.

Although the public art piece, entitled Solar Equation, is 100 million times smaller than our actual Sun, Hemmer uses solar animation in order to simulate flares and sunspots that never repeats itself, making the artwork a microcosmic production of the Sun – not to mention a sight to ‘stone out’ to after sunset.
