‘To Pop A Boner’ by Rick Owens, Berlin

In Berlin, where artists outnumber civilians two to one, Gallery Weekend is a big deal.

Over this past weekend, forty of the city’s hottest galleries joined forces for a non-stop marathon of openings and related festivities that amount to an early Oktoberfest for the art set.

For its part, vanguard boutique Apartment which sometimes doubles as a gallery – hosted a special exhibition of Rick Owens’ custom furniture, which debuted last year to much acclaim, and which is thought to go on view in New York City.

Organised by publishing mogul Angelika Taschen, the exhibition, subtly titled ‘To Pop a Boner’, pits the industrial severity of the Alexanderplatz district against Owens’ sculptural vision, which is equal parts Brancusi, Stonehenge and the Flintstones. Made mostly from raw plywood, resin and fiberglass, with the occasional bit of fur, the pieces are as functional as they are sinister and haunting. Versatile, too, such as this antler and skull coffee table, which can accommodate afternoon tea as easily as a human sacrifice. Try finding that at IKEA.

4 currently stock a selection of Rick Owens limited edition furniture, as well as his Spring/Summer 2010 menswear and womenswear ready-to-wear collections.
